DAVID HANNAN - ARTIST

Winner, National Aboriginal Day 2000 Poster Competition Celebrating Métis category for "Taking Time to Remember".

David Hannan was born in Ottawa in 1971 and is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art. His artwork is inspired by his Métis heritage and encompasses a variety of influences, reflecting both historical narratives and personal family history.

Hannan's goal is to advance the concerns of the Métis people through the medium of visual art. A common theme in his work is the search for identity in the modern world, based on knowledge gained through the history of the Métis people.

Hannan has had extensive experience exhibiting his art, including 14 group exhibits and three solo displays. He has collections in several locations across the country, such as the Thunder Bay Art Gallery in Thunder Bay, Ontario and the Indian and Inuit Art Centre at the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs in Hull, Quebec.

He has received numerous awards and distinctions during his career, including a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts and the David L. Stevenson Scholarship for Drawing and Painting. Coupled with a busy exhibit schedule, Hannan is also a children's art educator, sharing his enthusiasm for visual art with his students.
