INTRODUCTION
This Code of Safe Working Practices has been specifically
prepared as a guide and educational medium for masters and crews of
self-unloaders. It
deals with the fundamentals of safety for personnel and presents safety principals which
should be common knowledge. If followed, it should greatly reduce the risk of injury to
persons and prevent accidents involving equipment. Personnel should study and become
familiar with the contents of the code which, although comprehensive, cannot cover every
conceivable situation or be a substitute for good judgment, clear thinking or quick
action.
It is recognized that not all the provisions of the Code may
be applicable to all self-unloaders in all circumstances, but the principals should be
applied as far as practicable.
The Code should be helpful not only to masters and crews of
self-unloaders but also to owners, unions, government departments, vocational training
centres and all others who are striving to make conditions safer on board.
