Dreams Take Flight return to Kahnawá:ke

The MCK is pleased to announce that our community will participate in the 2006 Dreams Take Flight (DTF) program.

“Once again we’re proud to be taking part in a wonderful initiative such as Dreams Take Flight” said Grand Chief Michael Ahríhron Delisle, Jr. “We have to remember that some of our children may never get a chance to visit Walt Disney World; and Dreams Take Flight helps them realize their dreams.”

Due to the number of communities and organizations participating in the DTF program this year, the limit of four children has been reduced to three.

Kahnawá:ke Shakotiia’takehnhas Community Services (KSCS) will be selecting eligible children, between the ages of 6 and12. The trip will take place on November 8, 2006.

Where is Kahnawá:ke?

Kahnawá:ke is located 10 kilometers south of Montreal, on the banks of the St. Lawrence River. The word “Kahnawá:ke” means “on the rapids,” which perfectly describes the Territory’s eastern reaches.

Kahnawá:ke is one of seven communities, which comprise the Mohawk Nation. In turn, the Mohawks (or Kanienkehaka – the People of the Flint) are part of the larger Iroquois Confederacy. Kahnawá:ke is home to approximately 8,000 residents.

The MCK is the governing body for the Kahnawá:ke Mohawk Territory. In the political sense, the MCK consists of Chief and Council, twelve (12) representatives elected from and by the people.

For the purposes of clarity, it must be pointed out that the term “Mohawk Council of Kahnawá:ke” also refers more generically to the entire organization that provides administrative services to the community.

The MCK administers services such as policing, housing, and water & sewage treatment. This site will provide you with detailed information on Chief and Council, the many services, as well as a number of links to other important organizations that operate within the Territory.

Enjoy!
