Introduction

The Marine Certification and Training of Seafarers' Branch collects and maintains seafarers’ records, issues seafarers’ identity documents, discharge books and prepares statements of sea service. This Registry contains information on all seafarers who serves aboard Canadian Registered vessels of or over 50 registered tonnage including vessels of the Canadian Coast Guard.

The Seafarers' Registry

The Seafarers’ registry was created in response to the Canada Shipping Act and International Conventions and contains individuals’ names, dates and place of birth, record of vessels and periods of service. The records date back to 1948.  The purpose of the registry is to record information on Canadian Merchant Seafarers in order to provide statements of  Sea Service, Seafarers’ Identity Documents and Discharge Books when requested by seafarers, government departments and the private sector

ACES System

Ship Safety Automated Seafarer Examination Question System
[Automated Certification & Examination System (ACES)]:

As a result of concerns raised at the International maritime Organization (IMO) convention on counterfeit and fraudulent use of certificates, there is a new international requirement, under the Standard on Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW), to register, record and produce a new digitized Canadian Certificate of Competency for ships’ deck and engineer officers. Transport Canada is the certifying body responsible for Canada’s approval of the new STCW through IMO. The existing certificates of competency (approximately 40,000) will be replaced with digitized certificates with a photo to accommodate new requirements under STCW-95.
