The Commonwealth is a multilateral organization which grew out of a shared background, language and a respect of common values such as equality, democracy and rule of law. Today, the Commonwealth consists of 53 countries working together on many different issues, such as the promotion of democracy, good governance and human rights, at the governmental and non-governmental level.
