Food Mail Program

Fruit drinks and sweetened juice no longer eligible for shipment under the Food Mail Program as of January 1st, 2004

Indian and Northern Affairs Canada has decided that all fruit-flavoured drinks and sweetened juice will be ineligible for shipment under the Food Mail Program, effective January 1, 2004. Unsweetened fresh juice, frozen juice concentrate, and juice in Tetra Paks and similar containers will continue to be eligible for shipment at the rate applicable to Nutritious Perishable Food (i.e., $0.80 per kilogram, plus $0.75 per parcel.) Unsweetened juice in bottles or cans and fruit drink crystals with vitamin C added will continue to be eligible for shipment as Non-perishable Food.

This change, which is based on the latest evidence regarding the adverse effects of added sugars in the diet, will simplify the program and focus more of the program funding on healthier alternatives. Businesses and consumers will only have to check the list of ingredients on juices and fruit drinks, and if sugar of any type (e.g., glucose, fructose) is listed as an ingredient, they will know the product is not eligible for shipment under the Food Mail Program.
