Geo-Metadata

Geo-Metadata Query Tool

The Geo-Metadata Query tool allows you to search through hundreds of geo-spatial metadata entries pertaining to the Canadian North. The data is not directly available by using this tool, but can be obtained by using information provided in the metadata.

To use the Geo-Metadata:

  1. Enter any required general requirements in the General Information Section.
Select a desired location, product type, and subject from drop down lists. If your desired location, product, or subject is not available, simply leave the drop down on it’s default. This information is not required for the search.
  2. Enter any bounding coordinates in the Coordinates Information Section.
If you have coordinates for a more precise location, enter the bounding coordinates in the appropriate area provided. Modifying the coordinates will change the location variable in the General Information Section. This information is not required for the search.
  3. Enter any date and time requirements in the Time Period Information Section.
Select a time period from the drop down list, or enter a start and end date. To select a start/end date, select the year and day from the appropriate drop down box and enter the year as a four digit number. For example, 2004. You may enter only a start date, or only an end date. Entering only a start date will search for metadata from the date entered to the present date. Entering only an end date will search for metadata previous to the date entered. This information is not required for the search.
  4. Select which way the results should be sorted.
Selecting Placename will search the results by their location. Selecting Metadata will sort the results by their given titles. Selecting Coordinates will sort the results from north to south.
  5. Select to include only NIN entries.
By default, this tool only searches for Northern Information Network entries. If you would like to include entries outside of NIN, deselect the check box next to "NIN Information Only".

None of the above mentioned fields are required. Leaving all information on the provided defaults will result in all NIN entries being listed.

Adding New Metadata

With our new partnership with NRCan’s Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI), all of the metadata entries are now stored on the GeoConnections Discovery Portal (GDP). To add new content, you first must obtain a user name and password from the GDP.

To create an account at the GDP, use the Discovery Portal User Authentication form. Once you have created an account, information on creating and updating your metadata content will be provided on the GDP site.

Adding your geo-spatial metadata to the GDP is greatly appreciated. Your entries are an excellent way of assisting NIN in it’s goals to share information about Canada’s North.

Documents

The NIN site posts documents about northern issues and activities. New documents are constantly being added, so this is a good way of staying informed about action and plans in the North.

Viewing NIN Documents

The documents on NIN are easy to find. Simply follow the headings of the topics that you would like to view.

Documents are constantly being added to NIN, but if there is information that you feel should be included, let us know.

Links to other sites

NIN is created for sharing information about the North, so links with other sites point to other information relevant to Northern Canada. These sites are useful and interesting.

What are the Benefits of Using or Adding to NIN?

Those who use NIN will find it useful for researching topics about the North, locating maps, and finding other related sites, organizations or business.

Since NIN is a tool for sharing information, your input is appreciated. Without the addition of others’ knowledge, it would not be possible to gain maximum value from NIN. For those who have decided to add information, we thank you for helping us to educate others and appreciate the information you offer.
