Campbell River Cruise Ship Port

Since 1999, the Campbell River Indian Band has been working actively with the District of Campbell River and North Central Island Tourism to market and develop a cruise ship port for Campbell River in an effort to attract a share of the growing West Coast cruise ship industry.

Funding

Total cost of project is $5.3 million. Funding will support the expansion and upgrading of existing facilities at Discovery Harbour as well as the construction of a new wharf apron and access trestle. Once complete, the cruise ship port will be able to accommodate large cruise ship vessels carrying over 2,500 passengers.

The Government of Canada combined investment of $4.23 million is the result of:

  • $2.73 million from Indian and Northern Affairs Canada
  • $1.5 million from Western Economic Diversification Canada

This funding builds upon a previous investment of $200,000 from Indian and Northern Affairs Canada to support planning and feasibility activities.

Other investments in this project include:

  • $484,000 from the Campbell River Indian Band
  • $595,125 from the District of Campbell River

Benefits

Based on a Maritime Strategy International, Inc. study it is estimated that approximately 40,000 cruise passengers will visit Campbell River each year as a result of the development.

Direct Impacts

It is estimated that spending by passengers, crew and the cruise line while in port will create 100 full-time jobs and result in $5.4 million in annual spending.

Indirect Impacts

It is estimated that an additional 57 full-time jobs and $3 million in annual spending will be indirectly generated as a result of cruise ship tourism.
