Campbell River Cruise Ship Port
Since 1999, the Campbell River Indian Band has been working actively
with the District of Campbell River and North Central Island Tourism to
market and develop a cruise ship port for Campbell River in an effort
to attract a share of the growing West Coast cruise ship industry.
Funding
Total cost of project is $5.3 million. Funding will support the expansion
and upgrading of existing facilities at Discovery Harbour as well as the
construction of a new wharf apron and access trestle. Once complete, the
cruise ship port will be able to accommodate large cruise ship vessels
carrying over 2,500 passengers.
The Government of Canada combined investment of $4.23 million is the
result of:
- $2.73 million from Indian and Northern Affairs Canada
- $1.5 million from Western Economic Diversification Canada
This funding builds upon a previous investment of $200,000 from Indian
and Northern Affairs Canada to support planning and feasibility activities.
Other investments in this project include:
- $484,000 from the Campbell River Indian Band
- $595,125 from the District of Campbell River
Benefits
Based on a Maritime Strategy International, Inc. study it is estimated
that approximately 40,000 cruise passengers will visit Campbell River
each year as a result of the development.
Direct Impacts
It is estimated that spending by passengers, crew and the cruise line
while in port will create 100 full-time jobs and result in $5.4 million
in annual spending.
Indirect Impacts
It is estimated that an additional 57 full-time jobs and $3 million in
annual spending will be indirectly generated as a result of cruise ship
tourism.
