GOVERNMENT OF CANADA HELPS NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO FIRST NATION EXPLORE ECO-TOURISM OPPORTUNITIES

WAUZHUSHK ONIGUM FIRST NATION, ONTARIO (October 20, 2003) - The Honourable Robert D. Nault, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development is pleased to announce $60,900 to help a northwestern Ontario First Nation explore a new tourism business for the region.

Minister Nault says the funding is one way the Government of Canada is helping First Nations and the private sector work in partnership to improve access to economic development opportunities. "Everyone benefits when First Nations and the private sector successfully work together, it helps strengthens the regional economy," he said.

Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC), through the Resource Acquisition Initiative, is providing $60,900 to the Wauzhushk Onigum First Nation to help plan negotiations with potential partners in establishing a new tourism operation. The proposed operation would include an eco-tourism lodge, craft store, interpretive centre, and traditional village attraction. The funding is being used to prepare a community economic development strategy and a land use plan as background information for the negotiations.

Chief George Kakeway said he wishes to acknowledge the department's financial support. "Tourism is a key component of our community's economic and business development strategy. The funds will allow our First Nation to move forward with our planning initiatives," he said.

The Resource Acquisition Initiative helps communities fund resource sector and related business opportunities, which may include natural resource permits and licenses. Eligible project proponents receive funding through their respective Community Economic Development Organizations.

The Anishnabe of Wauzhushk Onigum First Nation is located approximately three kilometres southeast of Kenora, Ontario, with an on-reserve population of approximately 340 and a total membership of approximately 560.
