Nault, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, announced today, in partnership with 17 First Nations communities in Saskatchewan, an investment of $7.7 million to improve First Nations infrastructure.
Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC), and Infrastructure Canada are investing $4.5 million. First Nations communities are contributing the remaining funding. The Canada Infrastructure Program is assisting these communities in 19 projects in three broad categories: cultural and recreational facilities, green municipal infrastructure and local transportation infrastructure. The First Nations component of the Infrastructure Canada Program has received $31.125 million between April 2001 to March 2004. With contributions from INAC, First Nations and other partners, the total infrastructure investments in First Nations communities will total approximately $90 million. The Infrastructure Canada Program contributes up to one third of the projects costs. First Nations and INAC contribute the remaining funds, and in some instances, there may be private sector investments as well.
