Alberta First Nations Governance Pilot Projects
Tallcree First Nation - Governance Administration Code
Tallcree First Nation intends to produce and ratify a governance administration code that includes: procedures to cover meeting of Council, Elder's Council and membership; appeal and redress; roles and authority of elected and appointed officials; administration of government and other matters.

Smith's Landing First Nation - Band Constitution Codes
Smith's Landing First Nation will finalize codes to create a band constitution. This includes election regulation codes, membership codes and procedures for meeting of Council and membership. The First Nation is also developing other bylaws, including a redress mechanism.

Aboriginal Financial Officers Association (AFOA) of Alberta - Inventory of Existing Financial Management Codes
AFOA Alberta will complete an inventory of existing financial management codes. This newly established organization will gather all "best practices" in financial management and post the results on the AFOA Alberta website, providing First Nations with capacity development tools.

Wesley First Nation - Band Enforcement Bylaw and Revised Human Resources Policy
Wesley First Nation will work on the development of a band enforcement bylaw, addressing Section 23 of the proposed First Nations Governance Act. The First Nation will also work on the development of a human resources policy.

Piikani First Nation - Communications Centre
Piikani First Nation will develop a communications centre. This involves the operation of a community radio station and the printing of a newsletter that offers accurate reporting on news and issues affecting the First Nation. An annual report will also be printed.

Siksika Nation - Annual Report
Siksika Nation will prepare a comprehensive annual report to be distributed to on and off-reserve members, as well as various federal government agencies. The report would keep all members fully informed of Nation business. It would also include statistical information relating to INAC reporting requirements.

Bearspaw Band (Stoney Tribe) - Redress, Complaints and Appeals Code
Bearspaw Band will develop a Redress, Complaints and Appeals Code to be ratified by membership. Under this code, an impartial body will deal with grievances of band members and residents who allege a breach of the code.

Chiniki Band (Stoney Tribe) - Governance in Action
Chiniki Band will create an action plan and develop a human resources policy. The action plan includes clarification of the roles of Chief and Council, administration staff and business managers, as well as detailed policies to ensure financial accountability, transparency and stability. The human resources policy includes a fair and equitable salary grid with performance- based incentives for band staff and a fair, equitable and efficient appeal process for all human resource issues.
