![]() MINISTER ANNOUNCES FIRST NATIONS-DESIGNED GOVERNANCE PROJECTSAMHERST, NOVA SCOTIA (November 5, 2003) - Robert D. Nault, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, today announced one First Nations Governance Project totalling $50,600 has been approved in the Atlantic Region. This project has been funded to design or enhance good governance practices and tools in First Nations communities. "The pursuit of First Nations governance is about prosperity and building capacity", said Minister Nault. "Good governance builds hope among First Nations people. Good governance empowers citizens and strengthens their governments, leads to jobs, new business and economic growth. It supports social programs and health of communities." This initiative provides funding for communities to develop and implement effective governance tools and practices. Eligible projects include development and updating leadership selection codes, administration of government codes, financial management and accountability codes, and policies on conflict of interest and codes of ethics. Some communities are exploring the benefits of sharing specific governance functions. The Government of Canada is committed to improving the quality of life for First Nations people by strengthening governance, strategic investments in economic development and education - along with improving and providing safe drinking water.
