Nault, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, today announced that 45 First Nations Governance Pilot Projects totalling $1,096,511 have been approved in British Columbia (BC). First Nations communities will use the funding to design or enhance good governance tools and practices. "The pursuit of First Nations Governance is about prosperity and building capacity", said Minister Nault. "Good governance builds hope among First Nations people. Good governance empowers citizens and strengthens their governments, leads to jobs, new business and economic growth. It supports social programs and health of communities." This initiative provides funding for communities to undertake projects that develop and implement effective governance tools and practices. Eligible projects include development and updating of leadership selection codes, administration of government codes, financial management and accountability codes, and policies on conflict of interest and codes of ethics. Some communities are exploring the benefits of sharing specific governance functions. The BC regional office of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) invited all BC First Nations to submit proposals in August, and received more than 100 proposals by the September 22, 2003, deadline. The Government of Canada is committed to improving the quality of life for First Nations people by strengthening governance, making strategic investments in economic development and education, and improving and providing safe drinking water.
