Ontario First Nations Governance Pilot Projects


Northwest Angle #37 First Nation

This First Nation is a community of two distinct geographical divisions. Two thirds of the community is located on the eastern shore of Lake of the Woods. The remaining one third is located approximately 160 kilometres across the lake on the western shore. This community has received $50,000 to develop a Financial Administration Code that will be designed to take into consideration the realities of both sides of the lake.

Shoal Lake #40 First Nation

The Shoal Lake First Nation, located near Kejick, Ontario, has received $49,999 to develop a portfolio system that will articulate the roles and responsibilities of the Chief and Council and the First Nation's administration, as well as the coordination of these functions within the First Nation.

Wauzhushk Onigum First Nation

Located near Kenora, Ontario, the First Nation will invest $48,325 to revise and document a custom leadership code that will be ratified by the First Nation's membership.

Anishinaabeg of Kabapikotawangag Resources Council (AKRC)

Located in Sioux Narrows, Ontario, the Anishinaabeg of Kabapikotawangag Resources Council has received $76,725 to develop conflict of interest guidelines and a process for community redress.

Stanjikoming First Nation

The Stanjikoming First Nation has received $34,784 to develop a portfolio system that will articulate the roles and responsibilities of the Chief and Council and the First Nation's administration, and the coordination of these functions within the First Nation. This work will lead to the development of an administration code. The First Nation is also contributing $5,000 toward this project.

Wabauskang First Nation

Located near Ear Falls, Ontario, the First Nation has received $35,180 to develop a financial management code that will help ensure fiscally responsible and accountable community governance.

Iskatewizaagegan Independent First Nation (Shoal Lake #39)

The Iskatewizaagegan Independent First Nation, located near Shoal Lake, Ontario, has received $40,000 to develop a community decision making model that will allow the First Nation to engage its members in the governance of the community in a way that respects both traditional and contemporary ways.

Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation

The Wabigoon Lake Ojibway community, located near Dryden, Ontario, has received $34,380 to develop a community redress mechanism that will include the creation of documented policies and procedures and a Tribunal Board.
