Backgrounder
Governance Pilot Project of the Kitcisakik First Nation

The governance project of the Conseil des Anicinapek de Kitcisakik consists in creating a community development centre of "well being" and "know-how". It will provide the resources and framework to ensure the personal and collective development of community members while allowing them to effectively take charge of their future.

The community wishes to acquire governance tools so that members may become responsible for their duties: "We must take action as soon as possible on the social and community level to prepare individuals and families for a radical change in their living conditions and lifestyles (...). Community members showed their interest by taking part in information and awareness sessions; there is an interest and an urgency to prepare these young adults for taking their responsibilities as parents, builders and leaders of a new community."

The community of Kitcisakik is located 66 kilometres south of Val d'Or, where the Ottawa River flows into Grand Lac Victoria. It is one of the last semi-nomadic bands remaining in Canada. During the summertime, members of the First Nation occupy Grand Lac Victoria and in the wintertime, the Lac Dozois site.
