Education Week

April 3-7, 2006 



Education Week is a time to celebrate the important role that education plays in the lives of Yukoners.  Find out more about how your school, organization or business can get involved in Education Week.  Call the Department of Education at (867) 393-7102.

April 3

Yukon Conservation Society
Yukon Conservation Society will be hosting an Open House from 2-5pm at their office at 302 Hawkins.

Staff Development Branch 
The Staff Development Branch of the Yukon government is hosting an Open House 1-4pm.

Swan Haven
Swan Haven Interpretation Centre is open today through to April 30 - weekdays 5-9pm and weekends 12-7pm. An interpreter will be available to answer questions during their hours of operation.

MacBride Museum 
MacBride Museum is open for their winter hours 1-4pm Tuesday to Saturday.

Challenge CVA 
Challenge CVA is hosting two training opportunities for people with disabilities this week: Landscape/Greenhouse Training and Hotel Support Worker Skills Training.

Yukon Learn 
Yukon Learn is celebrating Education Week with an Open House from 11:30 - 2 pm.

Yukon Arts Centre 
This Education Week, visit the Yukon Arts Centre Public Art Gallery.  The Gallery is open Tuesday to Friday from 12 noon - 6pm, and weekends from 12 noon - 5pm. Three exciting new exhibits are on display: Allison Hrabluik’s The Pit Bar, Dawson City; Maureen Morris’ Headwear: Helmets, Hats & Halos; and Tidal Trace by Lyndal Osborne and John Freeman.

Christ the King Elementary School 
Christ the King Elementary students and staff invite parents to join them in a School Celebration of Lent 5.

Yukon Arts Centre 
The Community Grotto at the Yukon Arts Centre is hosting a new exhibit by Marie-Helene Comeau and Yvette Bourque during Education Week.

FH Collins Secondary School 
FH Collins Secondary School students will take a Vow of Silence to raise funds and awareness for a transition centre for African children who are exploited in work, victims of prostitution or orphaned by AIDS.

Takhini Elementary School  
Takhini Elementary School grade 7 students will be taking a field trip to Skills Canada – Yukon. Grade 2 students will work with a guest artist to make traditional First Nation rattles.

Carcross Tagish First Nation will be hosting a community bison feast and celebration of education outside of school walls.

FH Collins Secondary School 
Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation in partnership with FH Collins presents a Career Fair featuring information from the Public Service Commission, Yukon First Nations and many other career opportunities for young people.

Department of Education 
Come to the Department of Education at 1000 Lewes Boulevard from 4-6pm for our Open House. Meet the people at Public Schools and Advanced Education and find out more about our programs and services for Yukoners.

Visit the Community Education Fair at our Open House for information on a variety of education opportunities available in the Yukon.  Featured groups are:
• Recreation and Parks Association Yukon – Active Schools Program
• MacBride Museum – Materials and resources for teachers
• Department of Environment – how to bring the environment into the classroom
• Teen Parent Centre
• Porter Creek Secondary students – display of fabric art
opportunities available in the Yukon. 


Tantalus School 
Tantalus School is hosting a Community Literacy and Numeracy Tea at 2pm. This is a community event. Please join students, staff and parents for a fun afternoon of literacy and numeracy games.

Porter Creek Secondary School 
Porter Creek Secondary School is hosting a school-wide talent show to showcase their student talent. In the evening, they will also be celebrating the conclusion of a full day of fasting to raise money for the school’s Food for Learning program.

Whitehorse Public Library 
Enjoy good stories, music and a craft at the Whitehorse Public Library’s Storytime at 10:30am. This fun, educational program is designed for 3-6 year olds who are accompanied by an adult.

Canadian Parents for French Concours Oratoire will hold a French Public Speaking Contest at FH Collins Secondary. Yukon finalists will be sent to British Columbia to compete for spots in the National competition.

Takhini Elementary School
Takhini Elementary School grade 5 students will take a field trip to the legislative assembly. The Takhini Heartbeaters will give a skipping demonstration at the 11am assembly. There will be a school-wide talent show and tea from 6-8 pm in the school gym.

April 7

Yukon College 
Look for Yukon College’s publication, The Choice, inserted into the Whitehorse Star and the Yukon News. The Choice features information on Yukon College programs and services.



École Émilie Tremblay 
Join students and staff at École Émilie Tremblay during their Open School Day and celebration of poetry from 9am-3pm.

Holy Family Elementary School
Holy Family Elementary School will be holding a Spring Family Dance and Silent Auction on from 6:30-9:30 pm to celebrate Education Week.
Watson Lake Secondary School Watson Lake Secondary School is hosting a student luncheon at noon to celebrate literacy during Education Week.

Innovators in the Schools
Innovators in the Schools are hosting the 13th Annual Bridge Building Competition. Today is the deadline to drop off your bridge and narrative for the April 8 competition.

Learning Disabilities Association of Yukon 
Learning Disabilities Association of Yukon will be hosting an Open House today from 12-3pm at 1154-C 1st Avenue at Strickland St. See a computer demonstration of assistive technology to help people with learning disabilities.

Nelnah Bessie John School – All students will be travelling to Calgary and surrounding historical sites including Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump.

Hidden Valley Elementary School – Students will enjoy special guest readers every lunch hour during Education Week

Del Van Gorder School – Students will be undertaking an outdoor education field trip to the summit.

Yukon Transportation Museum – Will host educational tours. Call 668-4792 for more info.

Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation – Will be partnering with Yukon College in Old Crow to host an Open House and will have a special display on the culture camps at Chief Zzeh Gittlit School. Call 966-3261 or 966-3200 for more information.
