ACCESS TO PROFESSIONS IN MANITOBA

REGULATED PROFESSIONS

Professions that require a special license are called regulated professions. Self-governing groups called regulatory bodies have been established by the Government of Manitoba to set standards for practice and ensure that anyone providing a service in one of these professions is qualified to do so.

In Manitoba, it is illegal to work in or even use the title of certain regulated professions unless you have a license from a regulatory body. In other regulated professions, you can work, but you must register with the regulatory body if you want to use the title of that profession.

If your profession is listed in this brochure, you must have a license before you can practise in Manitoba.

Please note that if you are an Agrologist, Architect, Engineer, Geoscientist, Land Surveyor, Pharmacist or Physiotherapist or you may be required to work under supervision throughout the licensing process.

If your regulated profession is not listed in this brochure, you may work in the profession in Manitoba, but you may not use the title of that occupation unless you register with the regulatory body.

LICENSING PROCESS

Each regulatory body in each Canadian province has its own licensing process.  Regulatory bodies will ask for proof of  previous education. You will be required to submit original degrees, diplomas and certificates, including translated, notarized copies. They may also ask you for information about your previous work experience.

You may be required to take one or more upgrading courses and/or examinations to qualify for licensing. Many of these exams are only offered in English and must sometimes be written in another province. You might also be asked to complete an assignment or obtain Canadian work experience to qualify for licensure.

After you meet all of the requirements of your regulatory body and pay the mandatory fees, you will be granted a license to work in your profession in Manitoba.

It is important to note that the licensing process may be lengthy and costly. It will be helpful to learn as much as you can about the process before you begin. This will help you decide if and when to apply for your license.  For detailed information about the licensing process in your profession, contact your regulatory body (listed in this brochure), call Manitoba Labour and Immigration at (204) 945-6300, or visit our web site at www.immigratemanitoba.com .

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

You may qualify for financial assistance to help pay the costs of licensing. For detailed information call the Credentials Recognition Program at (204) 945-6300.
