Jean Martel Appointed to the Board of Directors of the Business Development Bank of CanadaOTTAWA, September 21, 2006 — The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC), today appointed Jean Martel as a member of the Board of Directors.
"With his sound knowledge and expertise in the areas of law and finance, Mr. Martel will be a welcome addition to the BDC," said Minister Bernier. "His contributions will be of great value to the Board of Directors as it continues to support the development and growth of Canada's Entrepreneurs."
Jean Martel is a lawyer at Lavery, de Billy, a major law firm in Quebec, where he has been working since 1999. Prior to this, Mr. Martel served as the head of the Department of Legal Services (1981–1988) and the Assistant Deputy Minister of Finance (1988–1994) for Quebec's Ministry of Finance. From 1995–1999 he held the position of President of the Quebec Securities Commission.
Mr. Martel received his law degree from the Université Laval. He continued his studies at the Barreau du Québec's École de formation professionnelle, where he received his certification to practise law.
