INUIT ROLE MODEL POSTERS UNVEILED

RANKIN INLET, Nunavut (October 24, 2003) - The unveiling of the Inuit role models poster series today at Alaittuq High School in Rankin Inlet marks an important step in promoting Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) as an employer of choice for young Inuit.

"There are a range of opportunities available to young Inuit and this project shows the diversity of jobs at INAC," says the Honourable Robert Nault, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development. "This is a step forward in encouraging young Inuit to seek employment with the department and in working towards a representative work force."

The posters profile four INAC employees working in different areas of the Nunavut Regional Office - economic development, lands, resource development and human resources with the theme "Your future - Your Career - INAC."

Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Member of Parliament for Nunavut, agrees. "For today's young people to become Nunavut's leaders of tomorrow, they need positive role models who strive for excellence in their careers. This project profiles four young Inuit who do just that," says Ms. Karetak-Lindell. "It's a great example of Inuit working for Nunavut and it also shows the Government of Canada's commitment to engaging young Nunavummiut in exciting careers paths."

Seemie Attagutsiak, Julia Lacroix, Jimmy Noble and Nancy Nowdluk are the Inuit role models. Seemie is the senior funding and development officer, Julia is the assistant land administrator specialist, Jimmy is a resource management officer and Nancy is the compensation and benefits advisor.

The role model project is part of the department's commitment to increasing Inuit employment at INAC. The trilingual (English, French and Inuktitut) posters will be distributed to schools across Nunavut.
