Nault, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, is pleased to announce a policy statement that prohibits bulk water removal, including for export, from major drainage basins within federal jurisdiction in Nunavut. A similar policy statement has also been established for the Northwest Territories. Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) is responsible for fresh water management in both Nunavut and Northwest Territories. The policy statements that have been developed for the two territories confirms and clarifies how INAC will implement the Government of Canada's position, announced in 1999, on the prohibition of bulk water removal from areas within federal jurisdiction. "This policy is consistent with the federal position on the prohibition of bulk water removal," said Minister Nault, "and it was developed through a cooperative approach with input from the territorial government. The need to protect, conserve, and properly use Canada's freshwater resources is recognized by all levels of government." Olayuk Akesuk, Minister of Sustainable Development, indicated support for the approach taken by the Federal Government to prohibit bulk water removal in Nunavut. "There is a need to protect, conserve and use Nunavut water wisely to ensure that this resource remains sustainable," said Minister Akesuk, "and this step is essential to the well-being of Nunavummiut, especially those who live a traditional Inuit lifestyle."
