Goverance

Strengthening governance is a key commitment of the government of Canada, reinforced in the last three Speeches From the Throne. The Governance Branch of the Lands and Trust Services Sector is responsible to lead the transition from Indian Act governance to First Nations governance and supporting the development of First Nations institutions and governance capacity. During the transition, Canada's constitutional and statutory obligations concerning First Nations will be rigorously respected. The Governance Branch is also leading the development and implementation of policy and legislative frameworks for new First Nations governance mechanisms and tools for First Nations institutions while simultaneously overseeing the discharge of the Department obligations for supervising elections, bylaws and other governance processes under the Indian Act.

The Governance Branch is leading such transition in partnership with First Nations, and ensures that they are fully engaged in designing and implementing transition measures. The goal is to achieve transformative change in an environment of cooperative, collaboration, relationship with First Nation leaders, organizations and citizens.

The Governance Branch also presents an integrated approach to governance related issues and activities which supports First Nations governments along the "Governance Continuum". It also presents a coordinated move towards targeted results to fill gaps and better position First Nations communities, and position the relationship with financial institutions around professional development. The Governance Branch is a strong contributor to the department's centre of excellence in consultation / engagement and is the centre of excellence on institutional development.
