MASHTEUIATSHGeographic location: Mashteuiatsh is the only Native community in Saguenay-Lac Saint-Jean. It is located on the west shore of Pekuakami, the ilnu name for Lac Saint-Jean, six kilometers away from Roberval. The community of Mashteuiatsh is accessible by highway 169, via Roberval or Saint-Prime. Population: 4 524

Within the territory: 1 947 Principal languages spoken: Ilnu aimun, French Historical overview: The government of Canada first established two territories: one near the Péribonka River, the other near Métabetchouan River. And, in 1856, these territories were traded for a new reserve location called Ouiatchouan, on the actual site. The community has been called Mashteuiatsh since 1983. Band Council: The band council consists of a chief and eight councillors elected in accordance with local custom.
