GOVERNMENT OF CANADA DECLARES IT WILL CONTINUE TO RECOGNIZE THE AUTHORITY OF CURRENT BAND COUNCIL OF THE COMMUNITY OF KANESATAKE

Today the Honourable Andy Mitchell, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development announced the Government of Canada will continue to recognize the ongoing authority of the current Grand Chief and members of the Council of the community of Kanesatake until an election takes place in the community. With the mandate of the current Council ending midnight July 13, the Chief and Council have passed a Band Council Resolution on June 29, 2004 to hold an election on October 9, 2004.

Until the October 9 election, the Government of Canada intends to continue working with the current Chief and Council. The Government of Canada encourages all parties to make every effort to take advantage of this opportunity for the members of the community of Kanesatake to express their democratic will through a free and fair electoral process.
