About Intellectual Property Policy (IPP)

The Intellectual Property Policy group consists of two directorates: the Intellectual Property Policy Directorate (IPPD) and the Patent Policy Directorate (PPD).

Intellectual Property Policy Directorate (IPPD)

IPPD’s role is to advise the Minister of Industry and senior departmental officials on intellectual property matters except for patents (which fall under the responsibility of the Patent Policy Directorate (PPD)), and together with other interested federal departments, to develop specific policy proposals and legislative initiatives in these areas. Along with the Copyright Policy Branch at Canadian Heritage, IPPD develops significant policies on copyright matters. IPPD also works closely with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, and provides key Canadian representation on intellectual property issues in international fora such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Group of Economies.
