The Transport Canada Marine Safety Award was established to stimulate an awareness of marine safety in Canada and to recognize persons, groups, companies, organizations, agencies or departments that have contributed, in an exceptional way, to this objective.

A certificate and letter signed by the Minister of Transport, as well as a pen set and a lapel pin.

All nominees must be residents of Canada or an employee of a Canadian owned organization.

Criteria    Top of page

The contribution to marine safety must fall within at least one of the following categories:

  1. An unusually high level of performance in the interests of Canadian marine safety over an extended period of time (3 years or longer);
  2. The successful completion of a program or research project which has had a significant impact on Canadian marine safety;
  3. A single act or effort which is so outstanding that it warrants recognition, e.g. exceptional contribution of expertise, time, skills, facilities, etc.

Nominators and candidates must sign the Nomination Form, acknowledging that they agree to be bound by the Rules of the Awards as defined in this webpage. The following information is required to support the nomination:

  1. A Header page that includes:

    the name(s) of the nominee(s);
    the nominaee's Home Address;
    the nominee's Company / Organization / Agency / Department, where applicable;
    the nominee's Language Preference;
    the nominee's Telephone Number;

  1. the criteria against which the award is being recommended;
  2. supporting documentation including, where applicable:

    a detailed description of the contribution of the nominee(s), with particular care taken to substantiate the significance of the impact of this contribution on marine safety. This narrative should cover such things as:

    • how personal or group qualities have contributed to the achievement of staff, users and members of the maritime community in terms of such things as skills, innovations, success in gaining respect and cooperation;
    • a description of the major program, project, research study, action or activity, covering such points as organization and deployment of resources (both financial and human) and involvement or commitment, and at what personal expense; and
    • the scope and impact of activities, in terms of benefits and results;

    additional documentation, if possible, in the form of letters of commendation, statistical data, performance appraisals, reports, newspaper or journal articles; and

    the name and telephone number of the nominator.

To be considered for the Award for the current year, nominations and supporting material must be received by January 13. The Selection Committee will retain nominations received after this date for consideration the following year.

The Award recipient will be notified prior to May 1.

The Selection Committee will consist of two representatives from the marine industry and two representatives from Transport Canada.

Rules of the Award    Top of page

  1. The Selection Committee of the Transport Canada Marine Safety Award will consider all properly submitted nominations and any materials supplied in support of them.

  2. No claim is to be made and no action brought against Transport Canada, the Public Service or its officials or the Selection Committee of the Award.

  3. The Selection Committee's decision is final.

  4. Materials submitted in support of any nomination will be accepted on the condition that:

    1. Transport Canada will return the supporting documentation to the nominee or the nominator ONLY UPON REQUEST;
    2. Transport Canada may disclose the names of the nominee(s) and the nominator(s);
    3. the nominee agrees that disclosure of material submitted in support of the nomination does not breach the terms of any contract of employment or any other contract, and that there is entitlement to make use of the material.
    4. a maximum of three individuals may be included in any one nomination to the Award.
    5. each nominee and nominator must sign the Nomination Form  which will constitute agreement to be bound by the Rules of the Award and which must be attached to the material submitted in support of any nomination.
