- History -

The Timmins Native Friendship Centre was realized in 1974. This was influenced by a large influx of Aboriginal people who were seeking employment in an urban setting and/or to attend the local education institutes. The majority of concern was with the numerous amount of Aboriginal students coming from the surrounding coastal communities to attend the local Secondary and Post-Secondary Schools. It was generally felt by the founders of the Friendship Centre that these students be provided with a positive environment, which would reflect their academic performance in a positive way. The Friendship Centre became incorporated in 1976 and received core funding in October 1982 from the Secretary of State through the Migrating Peoples Program. The current source of the Core funding is Heritage Canada's Aboriginal Friendship Centre Program (A.F.C.P), which is administered by the National Association of Friendship Centres through a contribution agreement. For the Centre to carry out its aims and objectives, and to ensure that a healthy atmosphere is provided to the Aboriginal community, the Centre responds by providing various services, which includes Counselling and Referral, Cultural, Educational and recreational activities. Current programs and services include: Life Long Care, Aboriginal Healing and Wellness, Family Support Counselling, Combined Courtworker Program, Pre-natal Nutrition Program, Healthy Babies Healthy Children, and a Literacy Program. The Centre is open to all Non-Aboriginal and Aboriginal people (Status, Non-status, Metis and Inuit). We guarantee a minimum of 50 hours a week of services and we have an open door policy to activities of cross-cultural significance. Through careful program selections and design the Timmins Native Friendship Centre develops and promotes the preservation of Aboriginal Cultural and Tradition.
