Salaries For First Nations Elected Officials
Just like any other level of government, duly elected officials of First Nations are responsible for determining their compensation. In addition to Indian and Northern Affairs Canada's (INAC) funding, First Nations derive revenue from other sources, such as band-owned businesses and arrangements with other levels of government which may be used in a variety of ways, potentially including salaries for elected officials. It is ultimately up to a First Nation's membership to decide if levels of compensation are appropriate. Band councils are required to release to their membership audited financial statements, which include a schedule of salary, honoraria and travel for all elected and senior unelected band officials. Just like any Canadian, First Nation members are free to voice their approval, or disapproval, with their elected officials at the ballot box. As part of the budgets allocated to First Nations every year, a small portion is an unconditional grant designated as "Band Support Funding." This portion of the budget is intended to help cover costs associated with operating a band office, such as: salaries for elected and non-elected officials, telephone and fax costs, office equipment, etc. July, 2001 |
