bullet Emergency Response Guide 2004
The 2004 Emergency Response Guidebook has been published. Please consult the list to obtain the new version of the emergency response guidebook.

bullet Corrections to the ERG2004

bullet ERG2004 On-Line
The ERG On-Line has been updated to reflect the ERG2004 version. The application is available for free use, 24 hours a day, in English, French and in Spanish. The ERG2004 On-Line is easy to use, fully interactive and includes colour coded sections similar to the original hardcopy guidebook. In addition, the application includes a searching tool that enables rapid retrieval of emergency response information for a given product name or product identification number (PIN).

bullet CANUTEC ERGO 2004 version 1.0
A recent and exciting addition to CANUTEC's web site is the newly improved ERGO 2004 version 1.0, a free downloadable PC version of the 2004 Emergency Response Guidebook. This new version includes all three languages within a single application. ERGO 2004  is self-extractable for easy installation by following the instructions available here

ERGO 2004 features a powerful searching tool for retrieval of multiple PIN. Also, a variety of searches by product name can be performed. ERGO 2004 can even search for all products referenced by a given Guide number.

ERGO also includes a "History Window" which provides a history of previously accessed information. This feature enables users to efficiently return to prior search results for quick consultation of emergency response guide information. Response information for specific gases or vapours that are Toxic Inhalation Hazards (TIH) and that are released when certain materials are spilled in water is also accessible from this window.

bullet ERG2004 Training Package A training package in PowerPoint format was produced by CANUTEC personnel and is made available to any user / trainer of the Emergency Response Guidebook.  Permission is given to use and modify the presentations if needed.  The presentations are available in English, French and Spanish.  Any comments should be directed to CANUTEC .

bullet More Links Links were also added and modified throughout the year. They include a broad array of hazmat related topics ranging from periodic tables of the elements to dangerous goods carriers.

bullet On-Line registration On-Line registration with CANUTEC is expected to be available in the near future. This service will enable consignors of dangerous goods to register with CANUTEC over the net in order to use CANUTEC's emergency telephone number as per article 3.5 (2) of the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations (TDGR). Once connected to CANUTEC's web site, consignors will be able to complete a registration form and upload their Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) directly to CANUTEC. Once the registration process completed, an access code will be delivered to the consignor granting them access to view and modify their filed information in order to maintain an accurate up-to-date file with CANUTEC. Existing registered consignors are encouraged to contact CANUTEC once the service is available to obtain their file access code. Security of the system will be ensured by encryption of data exchanged over the net. File access will be limited to users properly identifying both the consignor's name and a 10 digit access code.

The service should improve registration with CANUTEC by:

  • Providing faster turn around time for registration requests;

  • Minimizing time and expenses to deliver registration documentation to CANUTEC (i.e. registration form & MSDS);

  • Simplifying and accelerating MSDS management on CANUTEC's behalf;

  • Accelerating MSDS retrieval during hazmat incidents;

  • Encouraging accuracy of filed information whenever changes are made to the consignor’s contact information or MSDS database.

bullet Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG): Canada works with the United States and Mexico to prepare a North-American Emergency Response Guidebook for accidents involving dangerous goods.  This Guidebook has existed, in one form or another, since the latter part of the 70’s.

Within the Canadian Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Program, we continuously work at keeping the Emergency Response Guidebook up-to-date, including ERGO2004, the downloadable PC version, as well as the ERG On-line, the web browser version.

We are in constant contact with end-users of the Guidebook who are mostly fire-fighters, police officers and private emergency responders (normally from industry).

Recently, the United States published (on their rulemaking web page) a Notice that may give some people the impression that the opportunity to comment on the Guidebook is limited.  That is not the case (the limit does not exist).

The three countries have already started work on the preparation for the new printed version (ERG 2008) and are making a special effort to seek comments before the final document is sent for printing.  However, keeping electronic versions up-to-date remains a continuing effort.

You should know that comments aimed at making the Guidebook more useful (or to correct errors) are always welcomed.

In Canada, comments can be sent directly to the Director of CANUTEC (the TDG Program’s transportation emergency centre).
