BACKGROUNDER

Nunavut Geoscience Projects funded Under the Targeted Investment Program

Project:
1:50,000 Topographic Mapping Project

Proponent:
Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI)

Funding:
$1.5 Million over three years, $500,000 per year, 2006 - 2009

Project Description:
A lack of 1:50:000 topographic maps has been identified as a significant gap in the basic knowledge infrastructure for the territory. The Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated 1:50,000 topographic mapping project will begin the process of upgrading and producing new mapping of Nunavut. All existing 1:50,000 and 1:250,000 topographic maps will be updated and digitized. As well, approximately 120 new 1:50,000 topographic maps will be created.

This new and updated geoscience data will significantly improve the 1:50:000 coverage of Nunavut over major community and mineral exploration areas. As well, digitization of new and existing maps will allow all users of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), including the general public, to use and analyze these maps with their GIS tools. This new information will also be invaluable to hunters, search and rescue personnel and community and regional land use planning officials.

Project:
Nunavut Geoscience Projects

Proponent:
Department of Economic Development and Transportation, Government of Nunavut

Funding:
$4.5 million over three years, $1.5 million each year, 2006 - 2009

Project Description:
Seven individual projects will be funded under this Targeted Investment Program investment. All are mapping-related and are designed to address the gap in basic geoscience data in areas of Nunavut considered to be geologically interesting and/or of high mineral/hydrocarbon potential.

They are:

  1. Southampton Island Aeromagnetic Survey - a survey of areas on eastern Baffin Island that have geology similar to adjacent diamond-bearing and lead-zinc regions.
  2. Southwest Baffin Integrated Geoscience - Improve mapping/research of bedrock, surficial areas.
  3. Data Mining and Web-based Geoscience - Retrieve/consolidate existing geoscience data into formats accessible to the mineral exploration industry.
  4. North Baffin Integrated Geoscience - Mapping surficial geology at 1:100,000 scale, bedrock mapping and sampling.
  5. Boothia Integrated Geoscience - Bedrock mapping of areas previously covered by aeromagnetic survey.
  6. Churchill Corridor - Fuel positioning for 2007/08 field season, teleseismic survey, and collection of digital data for public release.
  7. Nunavut Energy - Stratigraphy Project: data gathering, bedrock mapping, hydrocarbon assessment and correlations.
