FOR VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers who work with teachers in the Adult EAL classroom, are an essential element of the Adult EAL system in Manitoba and fulfill a valuable role in assisting learners to improve their skills. In this section volunteers will find information about training they can take to develop their knowledge and skill in working with learners. (See below for Adult EAL Volunteer Training Workshop Calendar.) The Volunteer Manual, Learning Together (see link below) has a variety of useful suggestions for volunteers working in different situations.

ESL TUTOR TRAINING MANUAL
This English as a Second Language Tutor Training kit is a very helpful resource for novice teachers, tutors and volunteers in the classroom, because it brings a learner-centred approach to tutoring Adult ESL learners. The Tutor Training Manual below has many important teaching methodologies and cross-cultural aspects in teaching Adults in ESL.

Manitoba Language Links - EAL Training for Tutors and Teachers

Manitoba Language Links offers new EAL (ESL) volunteers, tutors and instructors the opportunity to participate in Professional Development through a web-based program.   It is intended to connect EAL service providers in regional programs with each other and with EAL specialists throughout the province in a network of mutual support.

The sessions begin with information about Adult Language Training and about the instructors’ role in ALT programs.  It goes on to address Manitoba’s best practices for teaching EAL in Manitoba.  This includes an introduction to the Canadian Language Benchmarks and Collaborative Portfolio Assessment.

Anyone is welcome to visit the site and access the material there.  We recommend that new teachers in ALT-funded programs consult with their coordinators and project officers about joining the course, submitting the assignments and completing a portfolio of their teaching experience.
