Canada's New Government Invests in Confederation College

THUNDER BAY, Ontario, November 17, 2006 — The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Health and Minister for FedNor, today announced an investment of just over $1M in support of three exciting initiatives at Confederation College of Applied Arts and Technology. The announcement came as the College was celebrating CONFEST 2006, and the official opening of the College’s Centre for Applied Media Production (CAMP), a $3.2M media arts facility.

FedNor funding of $500,000 helped the College purchase the state-of-the-art digital and multimedia equipment for the new Centre, which will provide students with hands-on training in preparation for careers in the media arts.

“Canada’s New Government is pleased to support Confederation College in helping students acquire the specialized skills they need for today’s workplace,” said Minister Clement. “Our investment will give graduates the training they need to find full-time employment and is another example of this government delivering on its commitment to Northern Ontario.”

Confederation College also received a FedNor contribution of just over $200,000 to install a remote access aviation system for the College’s Aviation Centre of Excellence. The remaining funds will assist the College, in partnership with Bowater Inc., to test whether roadside logging debris can be used for bio-energy productions.

“These exciting projects will give students access to the latest technology that will allow them to learn and train on industry standard equipment,” said Patricia Lang, President, Confederation College. “FedNor’s investment enables us to respond to the needs of the job market in industries with a bright future.”
