LAND CLAIMS
The Government of Canada has been committed to settling two kinds of Aboriginal land claims since 1973 - comprehensive and specific. The benefits of comprehensive land claim agreements can include full ownership of certain lands in the settlement area, wildlife harvesting rights, measures to encourage economic development and a financial component. The benefits of specific land claim agreements involve land and a cash settlement. Aboriginal communities affected by these agreements are using the benefits to build stronger economies and communities.
