Field Operations DivisionOur RoleThe Field Operations division inspects and enforces leases, licences, and permits issued by the Department in Nunavut. Our ActivitiesField Operations has a Resource Management Officer in each of the three regions (Kugluktuk, Rankin Inlet and Iqaluit) as well as two Water Resource Officers who cover the entire territory. Our Resource Management Officers provide onsite advice and education to leaseholders and land use permit holders in an effort to help limit any adverse effects to the land. Their primary function is to inspect and enforce leases, licences and permits issued by the department. An officer’s workload rises substantially during the short summer season when land resource activities increase and potential environmental impacts to the land are at their greatest. The Resource Management Officers work together with other government departments, Inuit organizations and regulatory bodies established under the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. Along with the Government of Nunavut, officers play a key role in spills agreements through onsite investigations. During the past few years, they have helped Regional Inuit Associations with land inspections. In addition, when a land use application is received, officers provide recommendations on conditions to the Nunavut Impact Review Board. The Water Resource Officers inspect water licences for mines and communities in the territory. During the inspection, water samples are taken, fuel and chemical spills are checked and results are reported to the Nunavut Water Board. In communities, the Water Resource Officers are accompanied by the foreman or senior administration officer and, in the mines, by a mine representative. Contact Us
