Africa & The Middle East Links

The Indigenous Peoples of Africa Co-ordinating Committee is an advocacy network of indigenous peoples organizations in Africa with over 70 members. Together, these groups promote the ratification of the UN Draft Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Africa.

The World Conference Against Racism held last year in Durban, South Africa, included a summary of the situation of African indigenous peoples on their website under the heading Indigenous Peoples in the Old World.

The Commonwealth Association of Indigenous Peoples, is a pan-Commonwealth network of Indigenous Peoples.

The Commonwealth Policy Studies Unit(CPSU), a London based think-tank, is running a three year research/advocacy programme called the Indigenous Rights in the Commonwealth Project.

The International Work Group on Indigenous Peoples is an independent organization that includes a section on indigenous issues on their website, including a 65-page backgrounder on African indigenous peoples by region.

The Center for World Indigenous Studies is an independent, non-profit organization that, as part of their Fourth World Documentation Project, has compiled an archive of documents relating to African indigenous peoples.

The Development Gateway shares information on Indigenous Peoples, Rights, and Knowledge and related areas which can be cross-searched by region.

The New Economic Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) is an Africa-led plan for the eradication of poverty and for sustainable development.

UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations prepared the United Nations Draft Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People.

The African Indigenous Women’s Organization (AIWO) is a pan-African advocacy organization based in Kenya which publishes Nomadic News, an African indigenous news magazine. For more information, please contact:
