The Africa Partnership Forum

The Africa Partnership Forum matches NEPAD in both its breadth and its scope and has as its objective maintaining international support for NEPAD and monitoring the partnership.

G8 partners account for some 74 percent of Official Development Assistance (ODA) to Africa. With the addition of 11 other countries, including the Nordic countries and the Netherlands (all longstanding and creative partners of Africa), the participants in the Africa Partnership Forum account for some 98 percent of ODA to Africa.

The Africa Partnership Forum also includes personal representatives of the heads of five key international institutions: the IMF, the OECD, the UN, the World Bank and the World Trade Organization. These include organizations able to engage on issues relating to infrastructure, a priority sector for African partners.

The new Africa Partnership Forum also includes the full 20 African members of the NEPAD Heads of States and Government Implementation Committee (HSGIC).

The Africa Partnership Forum has met on four occasions - in Paris in November 2003; in Maputo in April 2004; in Washington in October 2004; and in Abuja in April 2005. The Forum will meet next in October in the United Kingdom. The Africa Partnership Forum has chosen to focus on economic growth, education, HIV/AIDS, peace and security, and food security.

At these meetings, key development partners are for the first time present in a single forum, at the level of Personal Representatives of Leaders, in support of NEPAD in its entirety. The Africa Partnership Forum is emerging as the key international venue for the advancement of NEPAD and as an effective mechanism for accountability between partners engaged in support of the NEPAD partnership.
