2-02642 MOLD REMEDIATION FUNDING FOR FIRST NATIONS IN ATLANTIC REGIONFREDERICTON, New Brunswick (May 16, 2005) - The Honourable Andy Scott, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians announced today that First Nations within the Atlantic Region will benefit from $3,004,863 in funding for renovations to address health and safety issues. This funding, in addition to $1,104,998 previously received by First Nations in the Atlantic Region, responds to all proposals put forth by First Nations in the Region to address health-related issues within their communities. “The Government of Canada and Aboriginal leaders continue to place high priority on improving housing conditions in Aboriginal communities,” said Minister Scott. “While much improvement has been realized, this funding will enable First Nations in Atlantic Canada to further improve the quality of housing within their communities, ensuring safe and healthy homes for their members.” Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC), along with the Assembly of First Nations, Health Canada (HC) and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), is currently pursuing a strategy on mold. In the Atlantic Region, the On-reserve Housing Liason Committee, consisting of members from First Nations, INAC, CMHC and the Atlantic Policy Congress of First Nations Chiefs, is preparing materials to raise awareness regarding the clean-up and prevention of mold within on-reserve homes.
