MINISTER SCOTT WELCOMES NEW DEPUTY COMMISSIONER FOR NORTHWEST TERRITORIES

YELLOWKNIFE - Northwest Territories (June 9, 2005) - The Honourable Andy Scott, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians today announced Ms. Margaret M. Thom has been appointed Deputy Commissioner of the Northwest Territories.

“Ms. Thom has been very active in communities as an educator, facilitator and volunteer with years of service to thousands of people in the Northwest Territories. Ms. Thom has distinguished herself as a leader and counsellor and I welcome her to her new role,” said Minister Scott.

“I offer my congratulations to Ms. Thom on her appointment as Deputy Commissioner. She has already contributed much to the people of the NWT through teaching, counselling and helping to preserve our heritage and brings many strengths to her new office,” said Ethel Blondin-Andrew, Minister of State (Northern Development) and MP for Western Arctic.

Ms. Thom is a resident of Fort Providence. Her professional career has seen her working as a school counsellor, program officer and facilitator. She has led many workshops for diverse audiences on topics such as wellness, Aboriginal languages and community development.
Ms Thom has also served as a board member of Aurora College, the territorial board of secondary education and the Deh Cho Health and Social Service Board. She also served as a councillor for the Deh Gah Got’ie First Nation and Hamlet of Fort Providence.

As Deputy Commissioner, Ms. Thom will act when the Commissioner is unable to do so, or if the position becomes vacant.

The position of Deputy Commissioner was established under the Northwest Territories Act.
