NEW SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION COMPLETE AT DOKIS FIRST NATION

Toronto, Ontario (June 21, 2005) - The Honourable Andy Mitchell, Minister for Agriculture and Agri-food Canada and Member of Parliament for Parry Sound-Muskoka, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Andy Scott, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, the opening of a new $950,000 school at Dokis First Nation.

“This new school provides the children of the Dokis First Nation with the atmosphere they need to help maximize academic achievement,” said Minister Mitchell. “The Government of Canada believes that we all have a role to play in helping to foster success and will continue to invest in First Nation education, appropriate cultural learning, and social and recreational development.”

Funding for this project was cost-shared between Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) and the Dokis First Nation. INAC’s contribution was $500,000, while the First Nation provided $450,000. The new facility is 688.76 square metres, and provides one Kindergarten room, one classroom, a multi-purpose room, reception area, a staff and administration area, and storage. The space allocation accommodates the 24 children currently enrolled, and is expected to meet the First Nation’s needs for the next five years.

The strategy behind building the new school adjacent to the existing Dokis Community Centre was to facilitate program enhancements to the children’s curriculum, such as physical education, fitness and nutritional programming, and cultural teachings provided by Elders.

“Our community is eager to implement its unique educational programming in a new facility where everyone can feel comfortable,” said Chief John Restoule. “This new school is an investment in the future of our children, and our community.”

The Dokis First Nation is located on the shores of French River, 75 kilometres southeast of Sudbury, with a total population of 1,000, 170 of whom live on reserve.
