Development Assistance
Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI)
The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) program enables the Canadian High Commission in Nairobi to respond to a limited number of requests for financial assistance from community groups and development organizations that undertake small-scale, development-oriented projects. Funding enables recipients to establish self-help activities, contribute to the betterment of their local community, acquire new skills and create employment opportunities. Priority is given to activities that improve community-based social and economic conditions; involve women and men in planning and implementation in activities which further ongoing gender-sensitive projects; protect the environment; promote self-help and sustainable use of local resources and, demonstrate a high level of accountability and responsibility.
CFLI project proposals must show evidence of the following characteristics to be considered for support:
- The proposed timeline for the project activity must not exceed 18-24 months
- The proposal must conform with the development priorities established by CIDA for the targeted region
- The group must be a registered non-governmental organization (NGO), community-based organization (CBO), community self-help group, cooperative society or legally established community institution and have approval from local authorities
- The group must be able to demonstrate that it has significant experience in the planning and implementation of small development initiatives
