CIDA's Pan-Africa Programs

Sustainable development solutions for Africa must come from Africans and African institutions. CIDA supports the movement toward African-owned, African-led development activities addressing regional challenges. CIDA's Pan-Africa Program supports Pan-African institutions that want to develop their organizational capabilities, aimed at addressing continental development issues and building on multi-regional cooperation. CIDA's efforts in this regard support a number of projects that have a positive impact on the East African region, including:

(1) The Regional AIDS Training Network (RATN) is a network of training institutions in both the eastern and southern African regions. Established in 1997, RATN aims to improve the quality of HIV/AIDS training and awareness, to increase access to and demand for this training in order to strengthen human capabilities to respond effectively to the sexually-transmitted diseases and in particular, the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Fighting and preventing HIV/AIDS is an important part of CIDA's work and programs, such as the RATN, are making a positive difference.

For further information about the Regional AIDS Training Network (RATN) and a calendar of upcoming training courses, please visit their website at www.ratn.org For more information, visit the CIDA website.

(2) The African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) is the largest health development organization based in Africa with the mission to improve the health of disadvantaged people of Africa as a means for them to escape poverty and improve the quality of their lives through a community-based approach. AMREF strategies focus on capacity building, operations research and advocacy. CIDA is one of AMREF's principle funders.

For further information about AMREF, visit their website at www.amref.org

(3) The African Virtual University (AVU) is based in Nairobi and has over 20 learning centres around Africa. This distance learning project, using the power of the Internet, matches student and university needs in Africa with suppliers of content around the world. Taking advantage of local satellite and Internet technologies, the AVU offers affordable, quality education to students in Kenya and other regions of sub-saharan Africa.

For more information about the African Virtual University (AVU) and their courses/programs of study, please visit their website at www.avu.org.

(4) The work of the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) aims to strengthen bean research networks, striving to enhance the nutritional value of bean varieties and the distribution of improved varieties throughout Eastern and Central Africa. CIDA's contribution to these efforts enables women and children in Africa, through bean production, to receive valuable micronutrients currently lacking in their overall nutrition.

For further information about the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), please visit their website… or the CGIAR (Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research) website.

(5) The Centre for Corporate Governance is a leading organization working in the field of corporate governance. Through CIDA's Pan-Africa Programs, Canada is supporting NePAD priorities for an improved African investment climate and enabling environment resulting from enhanced corporate governance. Effective corporate governance will enable Africa's integration into the global market.

Visit the website of the Centre for Corporate Governance to find out more.

(6) Through the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT), the Quality Protein Maize (QPM) Development Project aims to increase production and consumption of QPM, an improved maize variety, thereby improving the nutrition and health of low income people in Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda and Tanzania who depend on maize as a major part of their diet.

For more information about the QPM Development Project, visit the CIDA website or the CIMMYT website.
