"At Transport Canada we are striving to ensure that whatever we
do contributes to an improved quality of life through safe and sustainable transportation.
The federal government cannot do it alone. We need to forge new partnerships among
government, industry, stakeholders and the public. And that means coming together to merge
our visions and goals in a common strategy that serves everyone's interests."

In RAIL, we have a number of exciting initiatives underway:
A) DIRECTION 2006
The primary objective of Direction 2006 is to increase
awareness of the safety issues associated with highway/railway grade crossings and the
dangers of trespassing on railway property.
Ultimately, our goal is to reduce grade crossing and trespassing accidents and
incidents by 50 per cent in the 10 year period between 1996 and 2006. To achieve this goal
we are partnering with railway companies, railway labour unions, provincial and municipal
governments, law enforcement agencies, safety organizations and representatives of the
public in the following seven key result areas:
- education
- enforcement
- engineering
- research
- legislative framework
- resources
- communications
B) RAILWAY SAFETY CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE (RSCC)
The Minister of Transport is committed to maintaining a permanent Railway Safety
Consultative Committee for the purpose of providing a forum for open communication between
Transport Canada and our stakeholders on issues of railway safety. The committee is a
mechanism that enables informed parties including railway companies, railway labour
unions, other government bodies and representatives of the public to come together,
dialogue, learn from each other, find common ground and provide input to government
decision-making in the interest of improving railway safety in Canada.
Through these and other initiatives, we at Transport
Canada are working with you to offer the best possible transportation for all Canadians.
