Assistance to Canadians :
Drivers' licences
Driving in Germany
If you will be in Germany for six months or less:
- Your valid Canadian driver's licence can be used for up to six months from
the date of your arrival.
If you will be in Germany for longer than six months:
- You must obtain a German driver's licence prior to the end of your first
six months in Germany.
How to obtain a German driver's licence
- All Canadian provinces and territories have signed an exchange arrangement with Germany
for regular automobile* drivers' licences.
- You may exchange your Canadian licence for a German one at your local German
Strassenverkehrsamt without undergoing testing; a fee applies for the exchange of licences.
For further information please contact your local Strassenverkehrsamt (vehicle
and driver licencing bureau).
*Note: There are no exchange arrangements for motorcycle drivers' licences or for lorries.
Canadian drivers' licences
The embassy does not renew drivers' licences. For matters regarding a Canadian
driver's licence contact the provincial or territorial Ministry of Transportation
that issued the licence.

International Drivers' Licences
International drivers' licences are available from the German
automobile club (ADAC), which is the equivalent of CAA,
or from the Strassenverkehrsamt, and are only valid together with a valid national
driver's licence.
