Transport Canada's Environmental Policy is to make sustainable development a fundamental principle of policy development, transportation safety regulation and program delivery, and to ensuring that all of its operations are conducted in an environmentally responsible manner.

Transportation is an energy consumer, accounting for 25% of Canada's greenhouse gas emissions — three-quarters of it from road transportation. As the issue of climate change continues to grow, transportation is becoming a focal point, because it is a major contributor of greenhouse gases.

In an effort to improve our environment and promote and encourage sustainable transportation, Transport Canada spends millions of dollars each year on funding programs, including Moving on Sustainable Transportation (MOST), the Urban Transportation Showcase Program (UTSP) and the Freight Sustainability Demonstration Program (FSDP). Another way Transport Canada is helping is through its Advanced Technology Vehicles Program cleaner cars will help make for a greener planet. What can you do? Check out our green travel tips to help do your part.

Transport Canada is implementing a number of sustainable development initiatives throughout the department, as part of its Sustainable Development Strategy. The strategy defines what the department can do to better integrate environmental considerations into its policy and practices while working in partnership with key stakeholders to achieve a more sustainable transportation system. There is also a group of environmental experts who provide Environmental Services for the department.

In the Pacific Region, a project team called the Victoria and Esquimalt Harbours Environmental Program (VEEP), has been established to manage environmental activities in Victoria and Esquimalt Harbours.
