Air transportation plays a significant role in Atlantic Canada's transportation industry. There are 28 airports in the Atlantic Region that currently provide scheduled passenger service. Of these, 13 are operated by local entities, the government of Newfoundland and Labrador operates 13 and two are still operated by Transport Canada.
Close to 6 million passengers pass through the Atlantic Region airports on an annual basis. Passenger traffic has grown by an average of 5.5 % per year over the last three years.
In 2004 there was a total of 392,629 aircraft movements at Atlantic Canada airports, consisting of 253,485 air carrier movements, 75,021 general aviation movements and 64,123 local movements.
An increasing number of airlines have entered the market to provide domestic, international, and charter passenger service to Atlantic Region airports. The entrance of new carriers and the expansion of the operations of existing carriers is a positive sign for the industry.
In Labrador, many communities rely on air transportation as the only means of transportation available to them on a year round basis.
