Competition Process

Placement in a Provincial Government or Health Sector position is generally through competition which is a process used to select the best candidate for a vacant position based on the principle of merit. The factors which determine merit relate to the duties of the job and include: education, skills, knowledge, experience (including unpaid work such as volunteer work or participation on boards and commissions) and past work performance.

Screening and Assessment

The interview board, which generally consists of three people including a Staffing Officer and the position supervisor, reviews all applications and based on the information submitted, selects for further consideration only those candidates who meet the stated qualifications. These short-listed individuals are contacted and given information on the subsequent selection process. The tasks of the interview board include: determining methods of assessment, marking any tests or written submissions, interviewing short-listed candidates and conducting reference checks.
