The governing body of the Province of Prince Edward Island is the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly is made up of Members of the Legislative Assembly - or M.L.A.'s - each one representing an electoral district. Members of the Legislative Assembly are elected by, and therefore responsible to, the people in their respective electoral districts.
A provincial Legislature may last up to five years but elections can happen outside this five-year time frame: the Premier may dissolve the Legislature for a general election or by-elections may be required and called between general elections to replace members who have died or resigned.
