Fire Marshal's Office

The Office of the Provincial Fire Marshal is staffed by the fire marshal, the deputy fire marshal and a fire safety officer. The office administers the Fire Prevention Act and Regulations as well as an America National Fire Code produced through National Fire Protection Association based out of Quincy Massachusetts, USA. This NFC is comprised of Codes, Standards and Practices which are produced as an international approach to Fire Prevention, Fire Protection and Life Safety.

The mandate of the office is to provide information, education and leadership to fire departments and various institutional, municipal and emergency service officials across the province to enhance their capabilities to protect citizens from the devastation of fire and related hazards. The Fire Marshal`s Office falls under the Office of Public Safety division of the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs.

The office's program delivery is divided into three areas of responsibility:

  • Regional Services - includes inspection of buildings, controlling building occupancies, the investigation of fires and advisory services and enforcement assistance to local assistants
  • Technical Services - involves review of plans, fire loss analysis, advisory and consultation on fire safety and regulations; and
  • Training and Education - involves services to fire departments, the general public and occupational groups.
