St. Peters Loop & Greenwich Day Trip Description

Route Description
St. Peters Loop & Greenwich Day Trip
Distance: 54 kilometers (34 miles) and 20 kilometers (13 miles)

These two easy rides begin in St. Peters, in northeastern P.E.I. Both can be done in a day, but if you are a beach lover, two days are better.

The loop begins with a section of Confederation Trail that traces the shore of St. Peters Bay. Next is a picturesque working harbour where you can watch fishermen land their catch and also buy fresh cooked lobsters and mussels at a dockside fish market. Now to the beach! Two beaches, actually. Both are somewhat off the beaten tourism path, with no facilities, yet they are just as beautiful as the Island's better-known beaches. Finally, we ride on another section of Confederation Trail and along Route 2 back to St. Peters.

We also briefly describe the ride out and back to the Greenwich section of P.E.I. National Park. It was established to protect unusual sand dune formations and to keep this portion of the Island's shoreline entirely unspoiled by development. The beaches are beautiful, there are three trails to enjoy, and there is an impressive interpretive center. While our directions are brief — it's a simple out-and-back ride, just 10 kilometers each way — their brevity is no indication of the time you should spend on this outing. If possible, allow a full day just for visiting this new, uncrowded addition to P.E.I. National Park.

St. Peters has a generous selection of lodging and restaurants for such a small village. Greenwich Gate Lodge and the Bayside Country Inn are near the Tourist Information Center where our rides begin. The Rodd Crowbush Golf and Beach Resort is along the loop ride. On the road to Greenwich is the elegant Inn at St. Peters. At the opposite end of the price scale is the Midgell Center, a community-run hostel. Returning to St. Peters we pass the Bayview B&B; and the Heartsease B&B.; Campers can stay at St. Peters Park. All locations are noted in the directions. See the online Visitors Guide for details.

There are three restaurants right in St. Peters village: Anne of Red Doors Restaurant, the dining room at Bayside Country Inn, and Rick's Fish 'n Chips. There is also public dining at the Inn at St. Peters, and at Rodd's Crowbush Resort. Groceries and snacks are available in St. Peters and along the route in Morrell.

The terrain on the St. Peters Loop is nearly level, except for a few long hills near the end, on Route 2. The road to Greenwich is gently rolling, not at all difficult. The biggest challenge on these rides is tearing yourself away from the beach.
