The green and gentle landscape of Prince Edward Island is so inviting that visitors find themselves spending plenty of
vacation time in the great outdoors.
Picnics on the beach, cycling excursions or just an afternoon lounging with a book under a tree are just some of the
possible ingredients of an Island fresh-air adventure.
Let's begin on the ocean, where the warm salty water laps up on sandy shores or rolls in against
red sandstone cliffs. "Surrounded by water" defines our Island and the opportunities to take advantage of that
fact are many.
For those who like to paddle their own boat, there are more than a dozen outfitters offering sea and river
kayak tours. This is an activity that can meet the needs of the most
adventurous or those who just want to try paddling for the first time.
It's true, you can swim in the warm salty water at PEI's beaches.
The shallow shelf surrounding the Island's shore allows the water to heat up, and in July and August you will find
supervised beaches in our provincial
and national parks. Other beaches are
perfect for those long solitary walks, or watching for the array of migratory and shore birds.
The Island is known for its excellent windsurfing conditions. Any
afternoon when the breeze picks up, cars loaded with boards and sails can be seen heading out to the many access points
around the Island.
Get out your bikes, or drop into one of the bicycle rental shops in PEI, for the Island is made for cycling. From
multi-day tours to a couple of hours on a woodland trail or along the roadside, bicycle transport is the way to see the
Island up close. The Confederation Trail is a first-class trail that connects
the Island from tip to tip. Built on abandoned railbed, the trail is flat and safe–why not take the whole family
on a bicycle tour?
Camping is a fun and inexpensive vacation option and
PEI is blessed with a wide selection of campgrounds.
Near the beach, among the trees, tenting plots or full service sites; we have it all. The province has 11
provincial campgrounds as well as National
Park camping and a large choice of private sites.
