standards. They range from significant local or regional operations to small
facilities with little or no commercial traffic. Under the National Marine Policy, these ports will be transferred to local government and community control.


Regional/Local Ports under Transport Canada ownership as of March 31, 2003 include:

  • Bushell (Sask)
  • Campbell River
  • Fond Du Lac (Sask)
  • Fort Chipewyan (Alta)
  • Gold River
  • Port Simpson
  • Stoney Rapids (Sask)
  • Victoria & Esquimalt

In addition, eight sites have been transferred to other federal departments, three sites (Port Simpson, Ladysmith and Cadboro Bay) were decommissioned and Transport Canada’s interests were terminated at Cowichan Bay, Zebellos, Billings Bay, and Nanoose Bay.
